I've heard very good things about some of the JS libraries/frameworks. I want to learn how to handcode things before looking at the libraries so that I have a more rounded understanding of JavaScript.

Javascript is ace but very misused and abused. Doing stuff unobtrusively is about a million times easier and more maintainable, plus you get warm fuzzies while doing it too. I can seriously recommend using something like the Prototype library, it makes life approximately a million times easier (useful functions and shorthands)
